How many people actually travel abroad each year?

Residents aged 15+ taking at least one personal trip abroad: share of residents (%), 2024.

In 2024, the share of residents taking at least one overnight trip abroad for personal purposes varied substantially:

  • Luxembourg: 82.5%
  • Switzerland: 80.2%
  • Norway: 69.5%
  • Germany: 61.0%
  • France: 29.5%
  • Spain: 27.1%
  • Italy: 13.2%

Across the EU, the figure was approximately 34.8%.

How to read it

These percentages count people, not journeys. Someone travelling abroad ten times is counted once.

International travel also depends on geography: crossing a border means something different in Luxembourg than in a large country with extensive domestic destinations.

About the data

The map covers 29 countries. Figures refer to residents aged 15+, exclude business travel and same-day visits, and combine people travelling only abroad with those travelling both domestically and abroad.

Cyprus is estimated; one Swedish component carries a low-reliability flag.
